Beaujolais Blanc Villages Argiles 2016 Domaine Paul Janin & Fils

Vines planted in 2006, in a clay soil in Romaneche-Thorins – 49 hl/ha in 2016
Oof, that’s a deep and citrussy nose – very inviting. Mineral, citrus fruit with a growing intensity – becoming a little more mineral and structured in the middle but never to an extent where I would say rigour! This is easy in the mouth and with sufficient brightness and sucrosity to hold interest. Very good!

Producteur de grande qualité (one of only 6 producers in Beaujolais with this rating) LE CLASSEMENT 2016
“Even if they do not possess the most prestigious plots of Moulin -à-Vent, they draw the quintessence. Congratulations!” La Revue du Vin de France

“The Janin’s estate is one of the leading lights of the Romanèche-Thorins. Its manicured vineyards are predominantly planted in manganese-rich soils that emphasize the wines’ spicy, very original taste of terroir and improve their ageing potential.” Bettane & Desseauve’s Guide to the Wines of France
OUR NOTES:
Certainly one of the leaders in the Moulin-à-Vent region, Janin makes beautiful, authentic, organic wines from old, low-cropped, bush grown vines, a third of which are now over eighty years old. These wines come exclusively from Janin’s own vineyards, which are hand harvested and tended with the greatest care, without the use of herbicides or pesticides. Janin only uses minimal sulphur in the vineyards and the winery. The traditional use of tank and large, neutral oak, brings the added dimension of freshness and purity to the wines. All wines are subject to strict fruit selections and are fermented with indigenous yeasts. The result is a range of superb, vineyard-driven wines.

Janin’s eight hectares of Moulin-à-Vent vines are scattered over 10 different parcels. Although it is common for people to point to the famous pink granite and ‘gryphees’ (fossilised seashell) soil types of this cru, there are a myriad of terroirs including large parcels of red clays and even more sandy plots. These can have a significant impact on the character of the finished wine. La Revue du Vin de France lists Janin amongst their top six Beaujolais growers and this is one of the very few Beaujolais estates forced to strictly allocate their wines.

While ripe and supple with fine structures, the wines show real individual expression. Eric Janin is a lovely man, and a highly respected, thoughtful grower making outstanding Beaujolais. These are wines of depth and longevity that are nonetheless bright, pure and perfumed. We highly recommend them.
