Moulin a Vent Les Vignes du Tremblay 2018 Domaine Paul Janin & Fils
“Deep ruby. Smoky, mineral-tinged red and blue fruit and floral pastille scents, along with hints of allspice and licorice. Sappy, penetrating black raspberry and blueberry flavors blend power and finesse and pick up a peppery nuance as the wine opens up. Closes long and appealingly sweet, delivering building tannins and an echo of ripe blue fruit.” 90 points, Josh Reynolds, vinous.com

Janin’s main cuvée Les Vignes du Tremblay, is crafted from a blend of parcels in and around the historical Tremblay climat of Moulin-à-Vent. The roster of vineyards includes Champ de Cour, Brusselions, Perelles and Aux Caves (each vinified separately). These plots cover a myriad of soil types and aspects but we can generalise and say that, for the most part, the vines are rooted in the pinkish granitic sands of the region (that lie under the famous windmill). Janin also blends in some young vine fruit (sub 25 years) from his best terroirs, Les Greneriers and Les Burdelines. The wine is fermented and vinified in a mix of concrete and steel tank, with 90% whole bunches. The old vine concentration, intensified by yields of 24 hl/ha, is immediately apparent and yet the wine remains nimble on its feet. Janin told us he is now punching down less so as to have a more gentle extraction and it shows here in the wine’s fleshly cherry fruit and finer tannins. Early picking (27th August) was also employed to capture freshness.
